Container offices

Four office builds, every spec listed

A Cactus Containers office is a shipping container our own fabrication crew converts into a workspace. The work is done in-house at the yard in Decatur, Amarillo or Midland, Texas, and the finished office is delivered to your site — a job site, a ranch, a lot, an oilfield location.

There are four office builds. At the Decatur yard: a 20 ft Economical Office at $12,172, a 20 ft Office at $17,500, a 40 ft Economical Office at $16,240 and a 40 ft Office at $24,613 — every one of those plus tax if applicable. Amarillo and Midland run a little higher because the base container costs more there, not because the build does; the switcher below shows the figure for your yard. Delivery is quoted separately, by distance from the yard.

Four office builds, every spec listed

At each size there are two builds. The Economical Office is insulated, wired, painted and climate controlled — a working office in bare steel. The Office adds interior framing, smart siding on the walls and ceiling, full trim out, and a heavier insulation package. Everything each one includes is listed below, with one all-in total. Pick your yard to see the price that applies to you.

Totals are for the finished office picked up at the Decatur yard. Amarillo and Midland share one price. Delivery is quoted separately, by distance from that yard.

These four are a starting point, not a ceiling

Every office is built to order — we can do less than this and we can do more than this. Add a second door, run more plugs, put in a bigger unit, split it into two rooms, skip the windows, change the siding — the four builds above are simply the specs we get asked for most, priced so you have a real number to work from.

Offices are buy-outright. Rent-to-own through our partner excludes anything with plumbing or electrical in it, and every office here is wired. You can still rent-to-own a plain container and have the office work done once you own it — see what qualifies.

Tell us what you actually need and we’ll spec it and price it. Send a quote request with your list, or call the yard nearest you — (940) 291-2797 in Decatur, (806) 557-3508 in Amarillo, (432) 423-2507 in Midland.

Dimensions

The steel shell an office is built in

Shipping containers are made to ISO standards, so the outside of the box is a known quantity before anyone touches it. These are the exterior dimensions of the container sizes our offices are built in — useful for working out whether the unit fits the pad, the gate and the crane pick.

ISO exterior dimensions of the shipping container sizes Cactus Containers builds office conversions in. These describe the steel shell only and say nothing about what a given office build includes.
Container size Exterior L × W × H Notes
20 ft standard 20′ × 8′ × 8′6″ The shorter footprint. Used for both 20 ft office builds.
40 ft standard 40′ × 8′ × 8′6″ Twice the length of a 20 ft, same height and width.
40 ft high cube 40′ × 8′ × 9′6″ One foot taller than a standard 8′6″ container.

Those are the ISO standards the containers are built to. Which shell a specific office build uses — and the exact condition of the unit it starts from — is confirmed by the yard when it quotes you. Browse the full shipping container catalog with per-yard pricing if you'd rather buy the container on its own.

How it's built

Our crew builds it. It is not a kit.

An office conversion is fabrication work Cactus Containers performs. It is not something you assemble, and it is not something we hand you in parts. Worth being clear about, because we sell both and they are completely different things.

This is what an office conversion is

A modification we perform

Fabrication done in-house by the Cactus Containers crew, on a container you buy from us. The work happens at the yard in Decatur, Amarillo or Midland, and the finished office is delivered to your site. You build nothing and fit nothing.

This is not what an office conversion is

An accessory kit you fit yourself

Cactus Containers separately sells accessory kits — parts for customers modifying their own container themselves. We do not install those, and buying one is not how an office gets built. Different product, different conversation.

Who orders them

What Texas customers use container offices for

A container office suits work that has to happen where the ground is, not where the building is. Because it's a shipping container, it can be set down on a prepared site and picked up and moved again when the work moves.

Job-site officesSomewhere for the superintendent, the paperwork and the plans to live while the job runs.
Ranch and farm officesAn office on the place itself — records, radios and a desk, out where the operation is.
Sales officesA front door on a lot or development where there isn't a building to put one in yet.
Guard shacksA manned post at a gate or entrance, in a box that locks and doesn't blow over.
Remote workspaceOilfield locations, back sections and anywhere the nearest office is an hour away.
Something else entirelyIf your use isn't on this list, call the yard. Our crew builds to spec and we'd rather hear the actual job.
Pricing

What the price covers, and how to pay for it

Four published prices, the same at every yard, plus tax if applicable. Delivery is the one number that changes with your address.

Prices on this page are buy-outright prices

At Decatur: $12,172 for the 20 ft Economical Office, $17,500 for the 20 ft Office, $16,240 for the 40 ft Economical Office and $24,613 for the 40 ft Office. At Amarillo and Midland the same four are $12,897, $18,225, $17,340 and $25,713. Each of them plus tax if applicable. The labour is identical at every yard — only the base container differs. Delivery is quoted separately, by distance from the yard the office is built at.

Placement rules for a container office vary by city, county and HOA. Check with your local permitting office before ordering, and tell the yard what the site looks like — access, ground and gate width all affect delivery.

Container offices are purchase-only — here's the honest reason

Every office we build has electrical in it, and our rent-to-own program doesn't cover containers with plumbing or electrical. So there's no rent-to-own on an office conversion — not at any of the three yards, not on any of the four builds. We'd rather tell you that here than let you plan a budget around it.

Most of what we sell does qualify, though. Storage containers, one-trip units, high cubes, double-door and open-side containers and cut-to-length builds can all go rent-to-own — anything without plumbing or electrical in it. If paying over time is what makes the project work, two things worth considering:

Rent-to-own the steel, add the office later. Take a one-trip 20-ft or 40-ft high cube on rent-to-own, own it outright at the end of the term, then bring it back to us for the office build. Buy the office, rent-to-own the storage. Plenty of jobsites need both. Buy the office outright and put a separate storage container on rent-to-own alongside it.

Questions, answered

Container office FAQs

How much does a container office cost in Texas?
Four builds. At Decatur the 20 ft Economical Office is $12,172, the 20 ft Office is $17,500, the 40 ft Economical Office is $16,240 and the 40 ft Office is $24,613. At Amarillo and Midland the same four are $12,897, $18,225, $17,340 and $25,713. Every one of those prices is plus tax if applicable. The build costs the same everywhere — the gap is the base container, which those two yards buy at a higher tier. Delivery is quoted separately, by distance from the Decatur, Amarillo or Midland yard.
What sizes do shipping container offices come in?
We build container offices in 20 ft and 40 ft. A 20 ft standard container measures 20 ft long by 8 ft wide by 8 ft 6 in high. A 40 ft standard measures 40 ft long by 8 ft wide by 8 ft 6 in high, and a 40 ft high cube measures 40 ft long by 8 ft wide by 9 ft 6 in high — one foot taller than a standard container. Those are the ISO exterior dimensions of the steel shell; which shell a given office build uses is confirmed when the yard quotes it.
What's the difference between the Economical Office and the Office?
The Economical Office is insulated, wired, painted and climate controlled — a working office in bare steel. The Office adds 2″×4″ interior framing, smart siding across the walls and ceiling, full trim out, and a heavier insulation package. At Decatur that is $12,172 against $17,500 in 20 ft, and $16,240 against $24,613 in 40 ft, all plus tax if applicable. Every item in both builds is listed above.
Can I use a container office on a job site?
Yes — a job site office container is one of the most common reasons customers order one. Because it's a steel shipping container, it can be set down on a prepared site and picked back up and moved when the job ends. Placement rules vary by city, county and HOA, so check with your local permitting office before ordering, and call the nearest yard to talk through site access before delivery is scheduled.
Do you build the office, or is it a kit I install myself?
We build it. An office conversion is a modification the Cactus Containers fabrication crew performs in-house at the Decatur, Amarillo or Midland yard before the container is delivered. It is not an accessory kit. We do separately sell accessory kits to customers modifying their own container themselves — a different product, and one we don't install.
Are container offices available rent-to-own?
No. Every office conversion we build has electrical in it, and our rent-to-own program doesn't cover containers with plumbing or electrical — so all four office builds are buy-outright, at every yard. The prices on this page are purchase prices, plus tax if applicable. What you can do instead: rent-to-own a plain container and have the office work done once you own it, or buy the office and put a separate storage container on rent-to-own alongside it. Call (940) 291-2797 in Decatur, (806) 557-3508 in Amarillo or (432) 423-2507 in Midland and we'll price both ways.
